JUST IN: Abia Commissioner for Lands, Chaka Chukwumerije, Escapes Assassination Attempt on Okigwe-Umuahia Road
Umuahia, Nigeria – 9th June 2025
In a shocking development, the Abia State Commissioner for Lands, Mr. Chaka Chukwumerije, narrowly escaped death after gunmen opened fire on his vehicle along the volatile Okigwe-Umuahia Road.
The incident, which occurred two nights ago, has raised fresh concerns about the growing insecurity in the South-East region, particularly on key intercity routes known for violent attacks and abductions.
According to a statement released by his brother, the renowned poet and public intellectual, Dike Chukwumerije, the commissioner’s vehicle was riddled with bullets during the ambush, but miraculously, no one sustained injuries.
“Two nights ago, my brother, Chaka Chukwumerije, escaped an attempt on his life. He was on his way from Okigwe to Umuahia, when the car behind him opened fire. It was not his time to die. So, he and the three others with him escaped unscathed, even though the car was riddled with bullets,” Dike wrote.
While details remain sketchy, sources suggest that the attack may have been an attempted assassination or part of a broader pattern of targeted violence against public officials in the region.
Authorities in Abia State are yet to issue an official statement, but security operatives have reportedly launched an investigation into the incident. The Okigwe-Umuahia road has long been considered dangerous due to its isolated stretches and history of criminal activity.
This latest development is expected to heighten calls for enhanced security measures and a strategic overhaul of policing across the region.
