DSS, Police Arrest 20 Over 2025 UTME Result Hacking in Abuja
ABUJA, NIGERIA – In a major security operation, the Department of State Services (DSS) and the Nigerian Police Force have apprehended 20 individuals in Abuja for allegedly hacking into the results database of the 2025 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME), conducted by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB).
The suspects, believed to be part of a highly organized cybercriminal syndicate numbering over 100, were arrested following a coordinated intelligence-led operation. According to preliminary investigations, the group specializes in breaching the computer systems of key national examination bodies, including JAMB and the National Examinations Council (NECO), with the aim of manipulating results and aiding candidate fraud.
Security sources confirmed that the suspects operated with sophisticated digital tools, exploiting system vulnerabilities to alter scores, generate fake result slips, and sell access to desperate candidates and parents seeking illegal shortcuts into tertiary institutions.
“This is a threat to the integrity of our educational system and national assessment infrastructure,” a senior DSS official stated. “We will continue to track and dismantle all such criminal networks.”
JAMB, in a swift response, reassured candidates and the public that it has already strengthened its cybersecurity architecture and is working closely with security agencies to prevent further breaches. Dr. Ishaq Oloyede, the Registrar of JAMB, noted that several result slips currently in circulation may be subject to verification and invalidation if found to be manipulated.
The DSS has also hinted that further arrests may follow as investigations extend across other states where syndicate members are believed to be operating.
This incident raises fresh concerns about the increasing use of technology in examination malpractice and the need for stronger regulatory and preventive mechanisms.
The public is advised to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities to the nearest authorities.
