Power Supply Returns to Yenagoa After Months of Darkness
YENAGOA — After enduring nearly five months without electricity, residents of Bayelsa State’s capital, Yenagoa, can expect power restoration within the next 48 hours, according to the Bayelsa State government. This development follows extensive repairs to 19 transmission towers vandalized in late July, cutting the state off from the national grid and crippling local businesses.
The Commissioner for Information, Orientation, and Strategy, Mrs. Ebiuwou Koku-Obiyai, provided an update on the situation during a press briefing on Monday. She emphasized that, although the vandalized towers are federal assets, the Bayelsa State government invested significant resources to repair them, underscoring its commitment to residents’ welfare.
“We have been in darkness for four months due to the destruction of 16 towers between Ahoada and Mbiama and three additional towers within Bayelsa State,” Koku-Obiyai explained. “These towers belong to the Federal Government, but the state stepped in to fix them. I am pleased to announce that power will be restored this week, though some areas may remain without electricity initially as we work to reconnect the entire grid.”
The Commissioner also announced plans to launch a task force aimed at curbing the vandalism of government infrastructure, particularly the sale of second-hand armored cables. “We will uncover those selling stolen cables and hold them accountable,” she warned. She further urged community leaders to take responsibility for safeguarding public infrastructure in their areas.
In addition to the damaged towers, over 250 transformers in Yenagoa have been vandalized, further complicating the power restoration process.
The Managing Director and CEO of Bayelsa State Electricity Company Limited, Engr. Olice Kemenanabo, confirmed that the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has restored power to Ahoada and is working to connect Mbiama to the grid, which will allow Yenagoa to regain electricity.
Engr. Lawrence Emeyi, Regional Manager of the Port Harcourt Electricity Distribution (PHED) Company in Bayelsa, commended the state government for its proactive efforts. “We are ready for business and look forward to providing reliable electricity to the residents of Bayelsa,” Emeyi stated.
The power outage since July has posed significant challenges to businesses and daily life in the state, with many relying on costly alternatives like generators. The impending restoration is expected to bring much-needed relief to both residents and businesses alike.
