Nigerian Troops Arrest Notorious Bandit Leader Behind Sarkin Gobir’s Assassination in Sokoto

The Nigerian Army has achieved a major breakthrough in the fight against banditry with the arrest of Bako Wurgi, a notorious bandit leader and arms dealer, allegedly responsible for the assassination of the Sarkin Gobir of Sabon Birni, Alhaji Isa Mohammed Bawa.

Wurgi, also known as Baka NaGarba, was apprehended by troops of the 1 Brigade in Shinkafi town, Zamfara State, on December 14 at 10 p.m. The arrest followed intelligence reports that he was receiving treatment at a local hospital for injuries sustained in a violent clash with a rival group.

Key Details of the Operation

Counter-insurgency expert Zagazola Makama confirmed the operation via his X (formerly Twitter) handle. According to Makama, troops acted swiftly on the information and arrested Wurgi despite attempts by two accomplices to evade capture. Another individual who transported Wurgi to the hospital using a tricycle was also apprehended.

Reports indicate that Wurgi played a central role in the July 2024 kidnapping and killing of Alhaji Isa Mohammed Bawa, which followed failed ransom negotiations. The bandits initially demanded a staggering ransom of N1 billion, later reducing their demands to N60 million and five motorcycles in exchange for the Sarkin Gobir's body for proper burial.

Wurgi is said to have international connections in arms smuggling and familial ties to notorious bandit leader Bello Turji. His son, Sani Duna, allegedly serves as a getaway biker for Turji, further exposing the intricate familial and operational networks within the banditry system.

Tragic End for Sarkin Gobir

The late Alhaji Isa Mohammed Bawa and his son were abducted in July while traveling from Sokoto to Sabon Birni. A heart-wrenching video released by the kidnappers showed the Sarkin Gobir appealing for help under duress, highlighting the cruel conditions of his captivity. Despite desperate pleas, the traditional ruler was killed, leaving a somber mark on the nation.

Conclusion

The arrest of Bako Wurgi represents a significant victory for Nigeria’s security forces in their ongoing battle against terrorism and banditry. However, the escape of his accomplices underscores the continued challenges in dismantling these criminal networks. Authorities have vowed to intensify efforts to bring all perpetrators to justice and ensure the safety of citizens in affected regions.

This development marks a step forward in restoring peace and security to Sokoto and Zamfara States, which have been plagued by banditry and violence in recent years.
