Niger Delta Liberation Movement (NDLM) Suspends ‘Operation Chevron Dragnet,’ Appoints Mediators for Dialogue
Warri, Delta State – The Niger Delta Liberation Movement (NDLM), also known as the Movement, has announced an indefinite suspension of its protest campaign, Operation Chevron Dragnet. The group disclosed this decision in a statement sent via email to Fresh Angle International at 5:19AM today, Monday, December 16, 2024.
The statement, signed by NDLM Secretary, Mr. Emmanuel Tagbanaraewumi, revealed the appointment of six prominent Itsekiris as mediators to engage Chevron Nigeria Limited, government officials, and other stakeholders on key issues affecting the Itsekiri host communities. The mediators include:
1. Chief Rita Lori-Ogbebor,
2. Comrade Amaechi Ogbonna,
3. Hon. Mofe Pirah,
4. Hon. Mode Akoma,
5. Hon. Toritseju Godwin Ebosa, and
6. Prof. Itse Sagay.
The group recalled its launch of Operation Chevron Dragnet on November 22, 2024, with a coordinated attack on multiple pipelines in Olero-Dibi-Abiteye fields and flow stations at 2:00 am. The campaign was prompted by Chevron’s alleged refusal to honor local content laws and fairly allocate recruitment quotas to Itsekiri host communities.
In its statement, NDLM emphasized the importance of dialogue and highlighted public opinion as the driving force behind the decision to suspend its operations. The statement read in part:
“The OPERATION CHEVRON DRAGNET... was suspended to allow for roundtable dialogue between stakeholders, including Chevron Nigeria Limited, the government, leaders and representatives of the host communities, and interest organizations.”
The group urged the government to fulfill its obligations in sustaining peaceful coexistence by addressing longstanding issues in the oil-producing Itsekiri communities, including:
Lack of drinkable water, Absence of electricity, Human capital development, and Infrastructural projects.
NDLM expressed disappointment in some Itsekiri leaders, accusing them of prioritizing personal interests over the collective welfare of their people. The group stated its belief in the credibility of the appointed mediators to represent the interests of the Itsekiri nation effectively.
The statement concluded with an acknowledgment of the sacrifices made by NDLM’s foot soldiers:
“We appreciate all our foot soldiers who have stood firm. Your sacrifices for the Itsekiri nation shall never be in vain. Remain steadfast.”
The mediation process is expected to address the grievances that led to the launch of Operation Chevron Dragnet and ensure sustainable solutions for the benefit of the Itsekiri people and their communities.
