Hackers Steal N180 Million from VeryDarkMan’s NGO Account, One Suspect Arrested
In a shocking turn of events, popular Nigerian blogger and philanthropist Martins Vincent Otse, widely known as VeryDarkMan, disclosed that hackers have siphoned N180 million from his non-governmental organization (NGO) account. The announcement, made via Otse's Instagram page on Friday, sent shockwaves through his followers and supporters.
The incident comes just months after the launch of the Martins Vincent Osei Initiative in October, which raised over N35 million in donations within hours. The initiative gained further momentum following a remarkable N100 million donation from celebrated music producer Michael Collins Ajereh, popularly known as Don Jazzy.
Details of the Hack
Otse revealed that the breach has resulted in N160 million being diverted to an undisclosed account, leaving only N20 million in the compromised account, which has since been placed on Post No Debit (PND) to prevent further losses.
Expressing his distress, Otse stated:
"For the past few days, I've not been myself. The NGO money, somebody hacked into the NGO website, and I don't know how they did it. N180 million is missing. But thank God we have tracked the person, and we are on our way to Jos. One person has been arrested."
Ongoing Investigation
Otse, who shared his ordeal from an airport alongside Officer Joe, confirmed that the suspect had been apprehended, and efforts are underway to recover the stolen funds. The NGO’s app has also been temporarily shut down and placed under maintenance as part of measures to mitigate further risks.
"I have even asked to shut down the app and put it on maintenance so that people will not really see what is going on. Hopefully, we get the money back," he added.
Public Reaction
The alleged theft of ₦180 million from Martins Vincent Otse’s NGO account has sparked diverse reactions from the public, ranging from skepticism to outright criticism.
1. Skepticism Over Website Hack Claim: Many questioned the plausibility of accessing bank funds through a website hack. One commenter, @Tony_shredah, said, "I thought the money was in the bank? How does hacking the website affect the money in the bank?"
2. Accusations of Dishonesty: Some individuals doubted the authenticity of the claim, with @Deyvxxd_ remarking, "VeryDarkMan said 180 million naira is missing cuz his NGO website was hacked. But Werey buy new car recently!"
3. Calls for Transparency: Social media commentator Oyemykke demanded more clarity, stating, "This is either a skit, or you are catching a cruise; which one is, say, dem hack NGO account?"
4. Comparisons to Previous Scandals: A section of critics drew parallels to past controversial incidents in Nigeria, with @michaelba_nabas sarcastically noting, "‘Snake swallowed 36 million naira’ ‘someone hacked into NGO website.’"
5. Demands for Accountability: Prominent critic Radiogad accused Otse of embezzling the funds, alleging that the money was spent on personal luxuries and demanding its refund within 48 hours.
The incident has clearly ignited a call for greater transparency, with many Nigerians urging Otse to provide detailed evidence to substantiate his claims and clear the air on the controversy.
As investigations continue, the arrest of one suspect brings hope that the funds may be recovered and those responsible brought to justice.
