Yahaya Bello Pleads Not Guilty to 16-Count Money Laundering Charges Amid Chaotic Courtroom Scene

Abuja, Nigeria — Former Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello has pleaded not guilty to 16 charges of money laundering brought against him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). The arraignment took place at the Federal High Court in Abuja on Wednesday, marking a pivotal moment in the high-profile trial centered on alleged financial misconduct during his tenure as governor from 2016 to 2023.

The courtroom descended into chaos early in the proceedings as a large group of Bello's supporters stormed the premises, disrupting the session. In an effort to restore order, Bello instructed his aides and supporters to leave the courtroom. Once calm was restored, Justice Maryann Anenih proceeded with the formal plea from Bello and two co-defendants.

Legal Teams Square Off

Kemi Pinheiro, SAN, is leading the prosecution on behalf of the federal government, while Joseph Bodunde Dauda, SAN, heads Bello’s defense team. Both sides are prepared for a contentious legal battle that could have significant political and legal ramifications.

Allegations of Financial Misconduct

The EFCC's charges against Bello allege the mismanagement of over N110 billion in state funds, including embezzlement and abuse of office. Initial charges filed by the EFCC involved 19 counts of money laundering totaling over N80 billion, with additional charges filed in September 2024 increasing the total alleged fraudulent amount to N110.4 billion.

The EFCC had previously arrested Bello as part of an ongoing investigation into his financial activities during his time as governor. Reports indicate that Bello was brought to the court at around 8:50 a.m. on Wednesday, under heightened security.

Co-Defendants Denied Bail

In related proceedings, the court dismissed the bail applications of Bello’s co-defendants, including Abdulsalam Hudu and Umar Oricho, who are implicated in the same case. The defendants are accused of colluding with Bello in laundering the massive sums under scrutiny.

A Trial Under Intense Scrutiny

This trial is closely watched by both the public and political observers due to its potential implications for Nigeria’s ongoing anti-corruption efforts. Bello’s tenure as governor has been mired in controversy, with allegations of financial impropriety dogging him even after he left office in 2023.

The trial continues, with the next hearing scheduled to address pre-trial motions and possibly set a timeline for witness testimony. As the case unfolds, it is expected to draw further national attention given its political and economic implications.
