Witness Testifies: "I Delivered $400,000 to Former CBN Governor Emefiele in an Envelope"

A witness, John Adetola, has testified in the ongoing trial of the former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Godwin Emefiele, revealing how he delivered $400,000 to Emefiele in 2018. The trial, presided over by Justice Oshodi at the Lagos High Court, Ikeja, centers on allegations of financial misconduct.

Adetola, who served as Emefiele’s Executive Assistant, stated that his responsibilities included managing office correspondences, attending to visitors, and handling tasks assigned directly by Emefiele. He claimed that in 2018, he received instructions via WhatsApp from Eric Odoh, Emefiele’s personal assistant in Abuja, to collect the sum from John Ayoh, the former Director of the ICT Department.

“I went to John Ayoh’s house in Lekki, Lagos, collected the envelope containing the $400,000, and delivered it to the former CBN Governor in Lagos,” Adetola testified.

EFCC Investigation

Adetola disclosed that in February 2023, he was summoned by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and provided a voluntary statement regarding the funds. During the interrogation, his mobile phone was accessed, revealing several documents and WhatsApp communications related to the transaction.

“The documents are a combination of official communications between myself and Mr. Emefiele, John Ayoh, and Eric Odoh,” Adetola explained. He identified procurement documents from companies like Limelight, Commec, and Dummia Oil.

Legal Arguments Over Evidence

The EFCC prosecutor, Mr. Oyedepo, sought to tender these documents as evidence, but the defense counsel, led by Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) Olalekan Ojo, initially objected, later withdrawing the objection when the documents were presented for identification only. However, Adeyinka Kotoye (SAN), counsel for co-defendant Henry Omoile, maintained his objection, arguing that such documents lacked a legal basis if not tendered as exhibits.

Justice Oshodi ruled that the documents be admitted strictly for identification purposes and adjourned the case to December 10 for cross-examination.

Background on the Witness

Adetola also shared that he knew Emefiele during his tenure as Managing Director of Zenith Bank before joining the CBN in 2014. He mentioned knowing several of Emefiele’s family members, including his wife, Margaret Emefiele, and brothers George and Okanta.

Next Steps

With the case adjourned to December 10, the focus now shifts to the cross-examination, where the defense will likely challenge the credibility of Adetola’s testimony and the admissibility of the documents tendered by the EFCC.
