Singer Davido Raises Alarm Over Alleged Plot to Cancel His Lagos Concert Over Economic Commentary

Nigerian Afrobeats superstar, David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, has raised concerns over a plot to cancel his much-anticipated December concert in Lagos due to controversial remarks he made about Nigeria’s economy.

The controversy stems from Davido’s appearance on the American podcast Big Homies House, where he advised Americans against relocating to Africa, particularly Nigeria, citing the nation’s struggling economy. His remarks ignited widespread criticism from Nigerians at home and abroad, with many accusing him of tarnishing the country’s image.

Prominent figures, including Joe Igbokwe and Reno Omokri, publicly condemned Davido’s comments. They argued that such statements could harm Nigeria's global reputation, especially coming from one of its most prominent entertainers.

In response to the backlash, Davido defended his stance, insisting that artists like him are the true ambassadors of Nigeria. He took to X (formerly Twitter), posting, “Y’all mad ‘cause we the real ambassadors!” His remarks underscore the role Nigerian musicians play in showcasing the country on the global stage through their art and influence.

The situation has since escalated, with Davido revealing threats to cancel his Lagos concert. “Dem say dem go cancel my show cus of my interview … loooool I don’t have to perform in Nigeria,” he tweeted, hinting at his readiness to perform elsewhere if necessary.

Despite the backlash, many fans have rallied behind Davido, praising his candidness and calling for tolerance of differing opinions on Nigeria’s economic challenges. The December concert, which is expected to be one of the biggest musical events of the year, now hangs in the balance as the fallout from his comments continues to unfold.

Observers believe this controversy highlights the growing tension between public figures’ freedom of speech and national image, especially in a politically charged climate. Whether Davido’s concert will proceed as planned remains to be seen.
