PDP Accuses Edo Governor Okpebholo of Squandering N30 Billion to ‘Compensate Godfathers’

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has accused Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo of mismanaging over N30 billion left by his predecessor, Godwin Obaseki, within just 14 days of assuming office. The allegations were made by Dr. Anthony Aziegbemi, Chairman of the PDP Edo State Caretaker Committee, during a press conference titled "State of the Nation Address."

According to Aziegbemi, the funds were allegedly used to reward political "godfathers" who supported Okpebholo's victory in the September 2024 governorship election. He also claimed that the state government had failed to pay November salaries to civil and public workers, marking a departure from the PDP-led administration’s consistent record of paying salaries before the 26th of each month.

"The PDP administration paid salaries on or before the 25th of every month for eight years. As of today, November salaries have not been paid, despite the N30 billion left in the coffers. The money has been shared with godfathers for their roles in circumventing the will of the people," Aziegbemi stated.

He further accused the Okpebholo administration of spending over N5 billion on vehicles without following proper procurement processes. He claimed that civil servants were being pressured to accept improperly documented vehicles and alleged that the administration was attempting to justify N2 billion in inauguration expenses.

In response, Fred Itua, Chief Press Secretary to Governor Okpebholo, dismissed the allegations as baseless. He stated that the administration was committed to exposing the alleged mismanagement under the PDP and emphasized that the government would not be deterred by "blackmail."

"The Okpebholo-led administration is focused on developing Edo State and recovering the commonwealth from dubious actors. No amount of blackmail will derail us from this mission," Itua declared.

The exchange marks an early escalation in political tension between the PDP and the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Edo State, as the new administration faces scrutiny over its fiscal management and governance priorities.
