Oba of Benin Palace Issues Disclaimer on Unauthorized Igue Festival Performance
In Benin City, 22nd November 2024
The Palace of the Oba of Benin has issued a public disclaimer regarding an unauthorized dramatization of the Igue Festival by a group known as The Association for Cultural and Economic Renaissance of Edo (ACERE). The event, scheduled to take place at the Muson Centre in Lagos on Sunday, 24th November 2024, has not been approved by His Royal Majesty, Omo N'Oba N'Edo, Uku Akpolokpolo, Ewuare II, CFR, Oba of Benin, who is the custodian of Benin customs and traditions.
In a statement released to the public and signed by Mr. Osaigbovo Iguobaro, Chief Press Secretary to the Oba of Benin, the Palace expressed serious reservations about the planned event. It was disclosed that the group, led by one Omorodion Uwaifo, had used the image of His Royal Majesty without authorization to promote the dramatization on social media, undermining the cultural, religious, and spiritual significance of the Igue Festival to the Benin Kingdom.
The Benin Traditional Council has taken legal action to restrain the group from proceeding with the event. According to the statement, the Lagos High Court granted the Council’s prayers under Order 42 Rule 8 of the High Court of Lagos State (Civil Procedure) Rules 2019. The court issued an order restraining the group from using the Oba of Benin’s image, signature, or any related materials to promote or stage the event without prior consent from the Palace.
The court order was issued on Friday, 22nd November 2024, and the public has been advised to disregard any claims by the group regarding their promotion of Benin culture. The Palace emphasized that the Igue Festival holds profound significance and cannot be misrepresented by unauthorized entities.
The statement concluded with the traditional salute, Oba ghato 'kpere, Ise, reaffirming the Palace’s commitment to preserving the customs and traditions of the Benin Kingdom.
For further clarification, the public is urged to rely only on information directly from the Palace of the Oba of Benin.
Signed:
(Mr. Osaigbovo Iguobaro)
Chief Press Secretary to the Oba of Benin
