Nigerian Police Arrest Ex-Commissioner Ihekweme in Abuja, Whisk Him to Owerri Over Criticism of Governor Uzodinma

In a controversial move that has sparked widespread outrage, the Nigeria Police Force arrested Dr. Fabian Ihekweme, a former commissioner in Imo State, from his Abuja residence on Wednesday. Ihekweme, known for his outspoken criticism of Imo State Governor Hope Uzodinma, was taken away in the presence of his wife and children, according to reports from SaharaReporters.
Sources confirmed that the ex-commissioner was swiftly transported to Owerri, Imo State, after the arrest. Human rights lawyer Deji Adeyanju publicly condemned the arrest via Twitter on Thursday, describing it as an alarming assault on free speech.
Adeyanju tweeted:
“Dr Fabian Ihekweme, a critic, was abducted by policemen yesterday in front of his wife and children in their Abuja home and taken to Owerri. His crime: criticizing Hope Uzodinma, Imo state governor. Like Uzodinma, like Burna Boy.”
The reference to Burna Boy appears to draw a parallel between Governor Uzodinma and the popular Nigerian artist’s alleged intolerance for criticism.
This arrest has intensified concerns about the shrinking space for dissent and freedom of expression in Nigeria. Critics argue that such actions undermine democratic values and could set a dangerous precedent.
While the Imo State Government and the Nigeria Police Force are yet to issue official statements, civil society groups and political commentators have begun mobilizing to demand Ihekweme’s immediate release and to challenge what they see as an erosion of constitutional rights.
This incident has once again raised questions about the balance between governance and accountability, with many calling on the federal government to ensure the protection of citizens’ rights to free expression.
