Nearly 46,000 Electric Vehicles Recalled in Canada Over Potential Power Loss Issue
Nearly 46,000 electric vehicles are being recalled in Canada due to a defect that could lead to power loss, increasing the risk of a crash.
The recall, announced this week, affects specific 2022 to 2025 models from Kia, Hyundai, and Genesis. A total of 45,974 vehicles in Canada are impacted, with over half already subject to similar recalls earlier this year and requiring additional repairs. In the United States, the same issue has triggered the recall of more than 208,000 vehicles.
According to Transport Canada's recall notices, the defect lies in the integrated charging control unit (ICCU), which may become damaged over time. This damage could prevent the auxiliary battery from charging, forcing the vehicle into a reduced power mode.
"If this happens, and you continue to drive the vehicle, there could be a loss of power to the wheels," Transport Canada warned, adding that such power loss significantly increases the risk of a crash. Vehicle warning lights and messages are expected to alert drivers before the power issue occurs.
The recall affects the following models:
Kia EV6 (2022 to 2024)
Hyundai Ioniq 5 (2022 to 2024)
Hyundai Ioniq 6 (2023 to 2025)
Genesis GV60 (2023 and 2024)
Genesis GV70 (2023 to 2025)
Genesis GV80 (2023 and 2024)
A Hyundai and Genesis Canada spokesperson confirmed to CTVNews.ca that no crashes or injuries related to this issue have been reported in Canada or the U.S.
"Upon fault detection, and accompanied by a series of driver warnings, the vehicle will enter a design-intended 'fail-safe' mode that allows immediate full propulsion while gradually reducing motive power as the battery discharges," the spokesperson explained. They emphasized that critical systems such as airbags, brakes, and power steering remain operational during this mode. However, if the 12-volt battery fully depletes, the vehicle will lose all motive power, heightening crash risks.
Kia Canada did not provide an immediate response to requests for comment.
Owners of affected vehicles will be contacted by mail to schedule a free software update, inspection, and, if needed, repairs at their dealership. Hyundai and Genesis Canada clarified that more than 26,000 vehicles included in this recall were also part of a March 2024 recall. This latest recall extends to additional units manufactured from March to November 2024.
Transport Canada, which relies on automakers to report defects and implement recalls, urged all vehicle owners to register their vehicles with the manufacturer to receive timely notifications about safety recalls and to address them promptly.
For more information, owners are advised to consult their automakers or visit Transport Canada's online recall database.
