Edo State Declares Over 200 Government Vehicles Missing Under Ex-Governor Obaseki, Recovers Stolen Palliatives Inside Bus

The Edo State government has reported the disappearance of over 200 vehicles under the administration of former Governor Godwin Obaseki. To address this, Governor Monday Okpebholo established a 12-member committee led by Kelly Okungbowa to recover all government vehicles allegedly taken by Obaseki and his aides. The committee has been given a two-week deadline to fulfill its mandate.
Within 24 hours of its inauguration, the committee announced the recovery of three vehicles: a Hilux van and two Toyota Hiace buses. Among the recovered items were bags of garri and rice (10kg and 25kg) found in one of the buses. These palliatives were intended for distribution to Edo residents but had not been shared.
Okungbowa, speaking to journalists, emphasized the importance of public cooperation and encouraged citizens to provide reliable information, promising handsome rewards for accurate and verifiable tips. He confirmed that the recovery operation was being carried out lawfully with the support of security agencies.
"We have made significant progress within 24 hours, recovering three vehicles. Reports indicate that over 200 government vehicles are missing. These are public properties, not private possessions, and should not be kept by individuals," Okungbowa stated. He revealed that the recovered vehicles were found at a private residence and speculated that other vehicles might be in the possession of former officials, including the Chief of Staff and Secretary to the State Government (SSG).
The committee has issued a 48-hour ultimatum for former officials and other individuals holding government vehicles to return them voluntarily. Okungbowa reiterated the need for public support, adding that their operations so far have faced no resistance due to the involvement of security agencies.
