LAGOS – Tragedy was averted on Monday morning when a 40-foot loaded container fell on a Toyota Camry with registration number LSR 293 HJ at Mile 2, along the route to Apapa Ports. The yet-to-be-identified driver of the vehicle miraculously survived the terrifying accident, which occurred at approximately 8:00 a.m.
Eyewitnesses at the scene recounted the shocking moment when the container, transported by a truck, tipped over, crushing the car. Immediate rescue efforts were initiated by the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), and the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA).
The driver, who sustained injuries, was swiftly rescued and rushed to a nearby hospital, where he received urgent medical care. Officers from the Kirikiri Police Division were also present to maintain order and ensure the safety of emergency responders during the operation.
By 9:30 a.m., the Toyota Camry was successfully removed from under the container. Efforts to clear the container and restore normal traffic flow were still underway, with LASTMA personnel managing the heavy congestion caused by the incident.
In a statement, the General Manager of LASTMA, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, emphasized the critical importance of safety measures in transporting containers.
“This incident underscores the dangers of negligence in securing containers during transit. Truck drivers and owners must ensure their loads are properly secured to avoid endangering lives and property,” he said.
