BREAKING: Former Kogi Governor Yahaya Bello Remanded in EFCC Custody Until December 10

In a significant development, the Federal High Court in Abuja has ordered the remand of former Kogi State Governor, Yahaya Bello, in the custody of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) until December 10. The decision was made after the court adjourned his trial and deferred the ruling on his bail application.

Bello, who pleaded "not guilty" to the 16-count charge of fraud and money laundering, faced opposition from the EFCC regarding his bail request. The charges against him allege the mismanagement of state funds, embezzlement, and abuse of office, with the total sum involved exceeding N110 billion.

The courtroom proceedings were marked by chaos as Bello's supporters flooded the premises, prompting him to intervene and order them to leave, ensuring a more orderly environment. Justice Maryann Anenih presided over the hearing, taking pleas from Bello and his co-defendants.

Representing the federal government, Kemi Pinheiro SAN led the prosecution, while Joseph Bodunde Dauda SAN headed the defense team for the former governor. The EFCC, led by Abdulrasheed Bawa, has been relentless in its pursuit, filing fresh charges against Bello in late September, raising the stakes in the already high-profile case.

Bello, who governed Kogi State from 2016 to 2023, was escorted into court at 8:50 AM on Wednesday. His case has attracted widespread attention due to the magnitude of the allegations and the significant public interest in the fight against corruption.

The EFCC initially brought 19 charges against Bello, along with his nephew Ali Bello, Dauda Suliman, and Abdulsalam Hudu, totaling over N80 billion. However, the recent charges have escalated the figure to N110.4 billion.

Justice Anenih's ruling to keep Bello in EFCC custody highlights the seriousness of the case. His bail application will be heard on December 10, marking a critical juncture in a trial that underscores Nigeria's ongoing battle against corruption.
