BREAKING: Armed Thugs Allegedly Linked to MC Oluomo Storm NUJ Secretariat in Abuja, Disrupt Event, and Injure Attendees
Thugs disrupted the inauguration of the Bus Conductors Association of Nigeria (BCAN) on Thursday at the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Secretariat in Utako, Abuja. The attackers, allegedly linked to Musiliu Ayinde Akinsanya, popularly known as MC Oluomo, stormed the event armed with machetes, knives, bottles, and sticks.
The event, which had earlier been attended by the Minister of Youth Development, Ayodele Olawande, was attacked shortly after the minister's departure. Led by Segun Aluwaye, who claimed to represent Berger Park, the assailants forced their way into the venue, causing chaos. They chased participants out, vandalized equipment such as cameras and chairs, and left several attendees injured.
Security personnel, including police officers and operatives from the Department of State Services (DSS), were also targeted in the attack. Witnesses described how attendees fled in panic to escape the violence. BCAN Chairman, Prince Israel Ade Adeshola, expressed dismay over the incident.
“We came to the NUJ Secretariat today to inaugurate our association, the Bus Conductors Association of Nigeria (BCAN). During the event, some miscreants armed with cutlasses, daggers, knives, and other dangerous weapons stormed the venue. They chased out dignitaries and guests, injuring many of our members in the process. They were wearing caps with pictures of Oluomo and destroyed several items," Adeshola stated, as quoted by SaharaReporters.
He noted that BCAN aims to combat “One Chance” crimes in Abuja and establish a database of bus conductors. BCAN, affiliated with the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), has vowed to take legal action over the attack. As of now, no arrests have been confirmed, though police vehicles have been stationed at the NUJ Secretariat to maintain order.
MC Oluomo, a controversial figure often described as a political enforcer with ties to the ruling party, has faced criticism for his role in violent incidents. He gained infamy during the 2023 elections for threatening the Igbo community in Lagos, warning them to vote for the All Progressives Congress (APC) or stay home. Despite being stripped of his position as NURTW president by a court ruling, he recently defied the decision and resumed office on Tuesday.
