27-Year-Old Man Sentenced to Seven Years Imprisonment for Cult Membership in Ogun State

A 27-year-old man, Afeeze Ishola, has been sentenced to seven years in prison by the Ogun Special Anti-Cultism Court in Abeokuta for his membership in the Eiye Confraternity, a proscribed cult group.

The court, presided over by Magistrate J.A. Akan, delivered the verdict on Friday after finding Ishola guilty of a one-count charge of belonging to an unlawful society.

According to the prosecution, led by Inspector Olaide Rawlings, the offence occurred on September 2, 2022, at approximately 4:30 a.m. at Opara II Estate, Rounder, Abeokuta. Ishola, a resident of Otitoloju Street, Mile 2, Along Ayetoro Road, Abeokuta, was apprehended by a vigilant community security guard who noticed him wandering suspiciously in the area.

Inspector Rawlings told the court that during questioning, Ishola admitted he was fleeing from a rival cult group that was threatening his life. The security guard handed him over to a police officer residing in the community. During police interrogation, Ishola confessed to being a member of the Eiye Confraternity.

The prosecutor explained that Ishola’s actions violated Section 34 of the Prohibition of Forcible Occupation of Landed Properties, Armed Robbery, Kidnapping, Cultism, and Other Anti-Violence and Related Offences Law, 2016, and is punishable under Section 36 of the same law.

In his ruling, Magistrate Akan stated that the prosecution had proven the defendant’s guilt beyond a reasonable doubt. He also described the evidence presented as credible and compelling. Consequently, Ishola was sentenced to seven years imprisonment without the option of a fine.

The judgment underscores the Ogun State Government's commitment to tackling cultism and other forms of criminality within the state.
